Typing Ergonomics: A Practical Setup Guide

Specific measurements for desk, chair, monitor and keyboard position, why negative keyboard tilt beats the flip-out feet, and the RSI signs worth acting on.

Most ergonomic advice is vague enough to be useless. “Sit up straight” and “take regular breaks” are not instructions you can act on. What follows is specific: angles, heights, and the reasoning behind each. This is general guidance for setting up a workspace, not medical advice. If you already have pain, numbness or persistent weakness, a setup guide is not the right tool — see a doctor or physiotherapist.

Start with the elbows, not the chair

The usual mistake is setting chair height for comfort, then accepting whatever the desk gives you. Work in the opposite order.

Sit with your upper arms hanging relaxed at your sides. Your forearms should reach the keyboard with your elbows at roughly 90 to 110 degrees. Slightly open beats slightly closed — a sharp elbow angle pulls your shoulders forward and loads the forearm flexors. Now adjust the chair until that happens. If your feet no longer reach the floor, you need a footrest, not a lower chair. If your knees jam against the desk, the desk is too low, and the fix is raising it or fitting a keyboard tray.

Wrists: straight in every direction

There are three ways a wrist can be bent while typing. Extension is bending the hand upward, the most common, caused by the keyboard sitting higher than the fingers’ resting level. Ulnar deviation is the sideways bend toward the little finger, caused by wide elbows with narrow hands, or by a numeric pad pushing the alphabetic section off-centre — a tenkeyless keyboard often fixes this. Pronation is the palms-down forearm rotation that flat keyboards force and tented keyboards reduce; it is the least urgent.

The target in all three planes is neutral — the back of the hand roughly continuous with the forearm.

Why negative tilt beats positive tilt

Nearly every keyboard ships with plastic feet that raise the back edge, which means nearly every keyboard ships in a configuration that works against you. Raising the back edge forces wrist extension. Sustained extension narrows the carpal tunnel and increases pressure on the median nerve, and it holds the wrist extensors under static load for hours. The feet exist because raised keys are easier to see, which mattered when people typed hunt-and-peck. If you touch type, you are paying an ergonomic cost for a visual benefit you do not use.

Negative tilt — the front edge slightly higher than the back, typically 5 to 15 degrees — puts the wrist closer to neutral when the forearms are horizontal. Some keyboard trays tilt this way natively; failing that, small risers under the front edge, or simply retracting the feet, already improves on the factory position. Flat is fine; positive tilt is the thing to eliminate.

Floating versus resting

Wrist rests are widely misunderstood. The name suggests resting your wrists on them while typing. Do not. Anchoring the wrist means every key outside the home position is reached by deviating the hand rather than moving the arm, and it presses the soft underside of the wrist — where the median nerve and tendons pass — against a firm surface for hours.

Float instead: forearms supported by armrests or nothing, hands hovering, the whole hand moving to reach distant keys. This spreads work across larger muscles and keeps the wrist neutral. It is more tiring at first, so add it gradually, and use the wrist rest during pauses.

Monitor height and distance

Top of the screen at or slightly below eye level — the top, not the centre. The eye’s resting position is a few degrees below horizontal, so a monitor whose centre sits at eye level makes you look slightly upward all day and encourages a chin-forward posture.

Distance: roughly an arm’s length, 50 to 70 cm for a typical 24-inch display. If you lean forward to read, the text is too small — increase the font size rather than moving the monitor. Laptop users face an inherent conflict, since screen and keyboard are attached: either raise the laptop and use an external keyboard, or accept the compromise for short sessions.

Breaks that actually work

Two different mechanisms need two different intervals.

The 20-20-20 rule addresses the eyes: every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. This relaxes the ciliary muscle from sustained near-focus and restores a normal blink rate, which drops during screen work.

Microbreaks address the musculoskeletal side: 20 to 30 seconds of hands off the keyboard every 20 to 30 minutes. Drop your arms, shake out your hands, roll your shoulders. The point is interrupting static muscle load, not stretching. Research on computer workers finds frequent short breaks reduce discomfort without measurably reducing output. Add a five-minute standing break every hour.

Warning signs

General tiredness in the hands after a long session, resolving overnight, is ordinary. So is mild stiffness that eases within a few minutes of starting.

Treat these as signals to change something now: tingling or numbness in the fingers, particularly the thumb, index and middle fingers; pain that wakes you at night or is present when you first get up; weakness or dropping things; pain spreading from the wrist up the forearm.

See a doctor if any of those persist more than a week or two, and sooner if there is numbness or weakness. Nerve compression responds far better to early intervention, and common self-treatments — daytime wrist braces, aggressive stretching, pushing through — can make some conditions worse. Diagnosis matters: carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinopathy and referred neck pain present in overlapping ways and have different treatments.

Technique is part of the setup

Position is half of it; force is the other half. Typists who bottom out every key generate far more cumulative load than the same person typing lightly on identical hardware. Light keystrokes with hands anchored near the home row are an ergonomic intervention as much as a speed one.

A daily challenge at a relaxed pace is a good way to practise the changes above until they stop feeling strange.
