Typing Endurance: Why Your Speed Drops After a Minute

One-minute scores overstate real typing speed. Here is what causes the decline over longer sessions and how to train sustained performance.

Most people know their one-minute score and nothing else. It is the number on the leaderboard, the number they quote, and the number they have optimised for without meaning to. It is also, for almost everyone, meaningfully higher than the speed at which they actually work.

Why the one-minute test flatters you

You start fresh, with whatever attention and hand readiness you brought to the test. The passage is short enough that a lucky draw of easy, familiar words can carry the whole run. And a minute is roughly the limit of how long most people can hold a genuinely elevated pace without the cost showing up. You are effectively sprinting.

The consequence is a systematic gap between test speed and working speed. Across five minutes, typists commonly lose 5-15% from their one-minute figure. Someone testing at 90 WPM over a minute is frequently a 78-85 WPM typist over five, and lower again over an hour of real writing with thinking pauses in it. The decline is not a flaw in your technique. It is the normal shape of sustained performance, and it is the number that predicts how much work you get done.

What actually causes the decline

Three mechanisms account for most of it, and they have different fixes.

Attention drift. Typing at pace requires you to stay one or two words ahead of your fingers, reading forward while your hands execute. That forward buffer is attentionally expensive, and after the first minute it starts to collapse, leaving you typing almost character by character. This is usually the largest single contributor, and it shows up as a sudden dip rather than a gradual slope.

Hand fatigue. Local muscular fatigue in the fingers and forearms accumulates faster than people expect, particularly with high-force switches or a habit of bottoming out every key. It rarely announces itself as tiredness at first, but as accuracy loss on the harder reaches — the little-finger keys, the number row, shifted symbols.

Accumulated tension. This is the one people underestimate. If your shoulders creep up, your wrists rest on the desk edge, or you grip rather than float your hands, the postural load builds steadily. Nothing hurts at ninety seconds. By minute four you are typing against your own bracing.

What consistency actually measures

Good typing tools report a consistency score alongside speed and accuracy. It is the most useful and least understood number on the results screen.

The underlying idea is the coefficient of variation. If you sample your typing speed second by second across a test, you get a spread of values rather than one flat line, and the coefficient of variation compares how wide that spread is relative to your average speed. Low variation means each second looked much like the last. High variation means you were surging and stalling.

Two typists can both average 70 WPM and be doing entirely different things. One holds a steady 68-72 throughout. The other alternates bursts of 95 with drops to 40 — hitting familiar words fast, then hitting an awkward one and stopping dead. The second typist has a rhythm problem, and it will not be fixed by trying to go faster.

Surging and stalling is diagnostic. The stalls mark the sequences you have not learned properly, and the surges show you have plenty of raw speed available. Working on the stalls raises your average far more efficiently than pushing the surges higher, which is why a high consistency score at a modest speed is the better foundation: that typist has the whole passage under control and simply needs to raise the ceiling.

Training for endurance

Endurance responds to progressive exposure. If your practice consists entirely of one-minute tests, you have trained exactly one minute of capability.

Extend session length gradually rather than jumping. If a minute is comfortable, work at three until three is comfortable, then five, then ten. Ten minutes of continuous typing covers the great majority of real writing tasks. Beyond that you are into a different problem — sustained work over hours — where the answer is breaks rather than conditioning.

Practise the longer sessions at a pace you can actually hold. The instinct is to start at your one-minute speed and hang on, which produces a familiar pattern: strong first minute, collapse, demoralising finish. Start 5-10% below your sprint speed. Watch the second half of the results more than the first, because improvement shows up as a flatter curve rather than a higher peak. If your minute-five speed has risen while your minute-one speed has not moved, that is the adaptation you wanted.

Posture and micro-recovery

Over one minute, posture barely matters. Over thirty, it is most of the story. The things that cost you late-session performance are wrist extension from resting on a desk edge or laptop lip, shoulders held up rather than relaxed down, and forearms unsupported so the shoulders carry their weight. Each is tolerable briefly and expensive continuously. Elbows near a right angle, wrists neutral, and hands floating rather than anchored will do more for your hour-long output than any drill.

Short interruptions restore more than their duration suggests. A ten-second pause every few minutes to drop the shoulders, open and close the hands, and let the wrists straighten resets accumulated tension before it compounds. Blink and refocus at distance while you do it, because a large share of what feels like typing fatigue is visual.

Where to start

Measure the gap directly. Take the one-minute typing test, then the five-minute test in the same session, and compare both the speed and the consistency figures. The size of the drop tells you whether you have a stamina problem or a technique problem.

Tracking that gap over weeks is the useful part — the statistics view shows whether your longer-session speed is converging on your sprint speed, which is what genuine endurance improvement looks like.
