Typing Numbers: The Number Row and the Numpad
The number row is the most neglected part of touch typing. Here are the finger assignments, the numpad trade-offs, and how to practise both properly.

Ask a competent touch typist to type a phone number and watch what happens. Nine times out of ten, the eyes go down. The alphabet was learned properly; the digits were not, and almost nobody notices because numbers are rare enough in ordinary prose to hide the gap.
Why the number row gets skipped
Typing courses front-load the home row, then the top and bottom letter rows, and by the time the digits come up most learners have already got what they came for. Frequency reinforces the neglect: in general English text, digits make up a small fraction of a percent of characters, so the row never gets the incidental repetition that fixes the letter keys. You cannot learn 7 by accident the way you learn e.
Then there is the reach. The number row sits a full row above the top letter row, itself already above home position. It is the longest reach on the board, and unlike letter keys it offers no shape or rhythm to lean on — nobody types 4 as part of a familiar chunk the way they type ing.
The result is a costly failure mode, because numbers cluster in exactly the contexts where accuracy matters most: dates, prices, invoice figures, version strings, port numbers. A transposed digit in prose is a typo. A transposed digit in a bank detail is a different category of problem.
Finger assignments for the digits
The system is the same one you already use for letters. Each finger owns the column it sits in, and the digit above its home key belongs to it. Left hand: the little finger takes 1, the ring finger 2, the middle finger 3, and the index finger covers both 4 and 5. Right hand mirrors it: the index finger takes 6 and 7, the middle finger 8, the ring finger 9, and the little finger 0.
The index fingers doing double duty is the part that trips people up. The left index reaches right for 5 from F; the right index reaches left for 6 from J. Those are the two longest motions on the row, and the two most often taken by the wrong hand. If you find yourself hitting 6 with the left hand, you will be hitting it inconsistently, and inconsistency is what produces transpositions.
Keep the opposite hand anchored — the reach for 2 should not lift the right hand off J — and return to home rather than lingering on the row, because the next character in real text is almost always a letter. The symbols above the digits follow the same assignments, being simply the shifted forms, so learning the row properly gets you !, @, #, $, % and the bracket keys at a discount.
Number row against numpad
The numpad wins decisively for pure digit runs. Its keys sit in a compact grid worked by one hand, with no row transitions and no travel back to a home row elsewhere. Experienced data entry operators reach rates the number row cannot approach — the standard measure is keystrokes per hour, and figures in the 8,000-12,000 range are ordinary.
The number row wins whenever digits are mixed into text or code, and this is the case people get wrong. If you are typing port 8080, or const MAX_RETRIES = 3;, both hands are already positioned for letters. Moving one hand to the numpad and back costs more than the reach ever saves. For a developer the number row is the one that matters, because digits in code almost never arrive alone.
A rough threshold: if you are entering four or more consecutive digits with nothing else between them, the numpad is likely faster. Below that, stay where you are.
Learning numpad touch typing
The numpad has a home row of its own. Place the index finger on 4, the middle finger on 5, and the ring finger on 6. The 5 key has a raised bump, the same tactile marker as F and J, so you can find the position without looking. From there each finger covers its own column: index handles 1, 4, 7; middle handles 2, 5, 8; ring handles 3, 6, 9. The thumb takes 0.
Practise digit groups rather than random single digits. Real numeric data arrives in chunks — three-digit groups, four-digit years, decimal amounts — and training on those patterns builds transferable motions in a way random sequences do not. Include the decimal point and Enter from the start, since in data entry work Enter is pressed as often as any digit.
Accuracy discipline is stricter here than anywhere else in typing. A misread word is recoverable from context; a wrong digit in a figure is silently, permanently wrong.
If your laptop has no numpad
The embedded numpad — where a function key converts JKL and neighbours into digits — is awkward, mode-dependent, and slow enough that it rarely beats the number row. For occasional numbers, learn the number row properly; it is the answer for mixed content anyway. If you do sustained data entry on a laptop, an external USB numpad is inexpensive and can sit on either side.
Where to start
Test yourself honestly first: type a dozen phone numbers without looking down and check them. Most people find at least one error.
