What Is the Average Typing Speed? Real Numbers
Average typing speeds by group and profession, what counts as fast, and why most quoted WPM figures are less comparable than they appear.

“What is a good typing speed?” is the most common question about typing, and it has a frustrating answer: it depends heavily on what you are typing and how the number was measured.
Here are the figures that are actually useful, along with the caveats that make them meaningful.
The headline numbers

The commonly cited average for adults is around 40 WPM. Most people who type for a living land between 50 and 70.
Why the numbers are less comparable than they look
Test length changes the result. A one-minute test flatters you; a five-minute test exposes fatigue. Most people lose 5–15% between the two. When someone quotes a speed, they rarely mention the duration.
Content changes the result dramatically. Common English words at 70 WPM might become 45 WPM on unfamiliar vocabulary, and 30 WPM on code full of brackets and operators. The keyboard skill is the same; the material is not.
Accuracy handling varies. Some tests penalise errors heavily, some barely at all, some let you continue past mistakes without counting them. A 90 WPM score with lenient error handling can represent slower real-world typing than a strict 70 WPM.
A word is a convention, not a word. WPM defines a word as five characters including spaces. So “the” and “internationalisation” are not one word each — they are 0.8 and 4 words respectively. This is what makes scores comparable across languages at all.
Speeds by context
Students typically type 30–45 WPM, with wide variation depending on whether touch typing was ever formally taught.
Office workers average 50–65 WPM. Above that, typing stops being the bottleneck for most tasks.
Programmers often score high on prose and much lower on code — sometimes half. The symbol density is the reason, not the language.
Transcriptionists work at 80–100+ WPM with very high accuracy, because their work is pure typing throughput with no thinking pauses.
The point of diminishing returns
For most work, typing stops being the limiting factor somewhere around 60–70 WPM. Past that, you are usually waiting on your own thinking rather than your hands.
That is not an argument against improving — friction below that threshold genuinely interrupts thought, and the difference between 35 and 65 WPM is substantial. But the difference between 90 and 110 WPM changes very little about a normal working day.
The exception is anyone whose job is transcription or data entry, where throughput is the work and every additional word per minute converts directly into time.
Measuring yourself honestly
Three rules for a number you can trust:
- Use the same test length every time. Comparing a one-minute score to a five-minute score always looks like regression.
- Take three tests and use the middle result. Single tests are noisy.
- Record accuracy alongside speed. A speed figure without an accuracy figure is close to meaningless.
Get your baseline with the typing test, or use the 1 minute typing test for the standard benchmark that most published averages are based on.
Once you have a few results, the statistics page shows your trend over time — which is far more informative than any single score, and the only number that tells you whether your practice is working.
